A team may release any player, once released the player is then placed on waivers for 72 hours. The original team owes 50% of the players guaranteed salary for the length of the contract. However if another team claims the player you owe nothing. If a player clears waivers, he becomes a Free Agent and may be signed by anybody in the league. If the player clears waivers, and then signs with another team, the team that released him still owes the penalty. Minor league players can be released with no penalty.
The waiver wire order will be the reverse of the first year player draft. Everytime a team signs a free agent or a successfully claims a waiver wire pickup they move to the bottom of the waiver wire order.
